Subiaco Farmers Market

There is nothing better than waking up on a Saturday and heading down to one of the local farmers markets. The smell of fresh croissants, fruits and vegetables is my favourite way to start the weekend.

This was the first time I had visited Subiaco Farmers Markets, and I will probably go back for two reasons; one – $1 organic sultana scrolls from Artisan Organic Foods, and two – $6.50 organic sourdough bread from Loafers .I usually buy my sourdough from Abhi’s Bakery or Little Home Bakery; both of which make absolutely moorish goods, but this particular bread was just a bit more sour than usual and had the perfect firmness – not as hard as a rye, but not as soft as a sandwich loaf. Delicious.

Overall, Subiaco Farmers Markets has a great selection of organic produce; breads, baked treats, potted herbs, handmade organic cheese, eggs, oils, meats, chocolate, two certified fruit and vegetable shops, and even dog food. You can see a list of the stallholders here.

Although the prices for fruit and vegetables were a little more expensive than I am used to, Hamel Homegrown Organics did have some fairly well priced items  ($2 large zucchinis, $3 whole rockmelons, $6 kg large tomatoes).

Subiaco Farmers Market is a beautiful place to visit and it has all the good things a market should have (music, food, tastings, really large dogs!). I would definitely make the trip again for the bread and scroll.

  1. My boyfriend and I came down here today as well, but pretty late so we must have missed you.

    I saw that huge great dane, as well as two gorgeous king charles cavalier spaniels and a pug. Dogs and farmers markets, just try and separate them!

    And for that in itself, I love them.

    There were also organically grown / fertilized chilli plants too which ze boy acquired one of. (I am a wimp and can’t deal with hot stuff!)

    Although not organic, we also had DELICIOUS zucchini, cranberry & walnut muffins with an orange, lemon & lime juice which were fantastic.

    I go here most weekends and it makes me pretty happy.

    Great to hear you enyoyed our Loafers ultimate sour dough. Using wild yeast cultures and organic ingredients is very challenging, The positive feed back makes the hard work worthwhile.

    That product goes through 8 process steps all of which are done by hand (accept baking and one mixing step). So happy you enjoyed it- working 7 days night shift can be a thankless task

    We will be getting some of our lines certified organic in the next six months (as we expand to new premises) So keep an eye out on our website, there will be much advertising and fanfare when we achieve this goal.

      I have heard certification can be quite a timely and challenging process, so big congrats for almost getting there – that’s really exciting.
